The purpose of philosophical analysis, according to Moore, is merely to pf the precise implications of the truth of such beliefs, and that is the procedure he followed in “A Defence of Common Sense” Twentieth Century Analytic Philosophy. It was only towards the end of his career that he encountered in Ducasse’s adverbial theory a serious alternative to the sense-datum hypothesis.

AS rationalists, the absolute idealists are committed to their central claim about the fundamental nature of reality to be knowable not through the senses but through Reason. By all accounts, Moore was an exemplary husband and father. Moore sums up his view this way: But, according to Moore, this is a mistake. This position, Moore argued, is not only self-defeating and impractical but also logically inconsistent. Since Moore, it has been the norm to attempt to do criteriology apart from the ontology of cognition, and the question about the criterion or criteria for justification remains a central matter of debate.
The following passage from Principia Ethica is indicative of his polemic which can be found in many of his writings of this period:. He occupied that position untilwhen he retired and was succeeded by Wittgenstein. Within the academy, non-cognitive theories of ethics dominated until nearly To do so would have been a genuine possibility, since to abandon direct realism is to admit that we have no direct evidence of the existence of the commonsense world.
Moore’s Fellowship ended in ; after a spell away from Cambridge, Moore returned there in to a lectureship in the University and he then lived there for the rest of his life apart from an extended visit to the U. That there is no alternative for the rationalist to self-evident or logically demonstrable. Moore himself set this out clearly in a subsequent discussion of his lecture:. So it is in this dissertation that Moore turns decisively against idealist philosophy, both in its Kantian and Bradleian forms.
